Military Tattoo.

We saw the yearly Military Tattoo in Hamilton Canada yesterday. Some people ask me What is a Tattoo. Here it is. Imagine yourself sitting in a tavern in the 17 th Century Holland. In those days, when British troops served in the lowlands, it was the custom for a drummer to march trough the streets, beating his drum to warn the troops that it was time tp leave the taverns and return to their billets. The Dutch innkeepers, at the sound of the drum, would order "doe de tap toe" or turn off the taps. In English "taptoe" became tattoo and over the years, the drummer was accompanied by fife or bugle player and perhaps piper.Hence the beginnings of a regimental band and soon they performing concerts for local population. What began as daily routine in army life is today the military tattoo, where you will thrill to performance featuring a lively rhythm of marching bands, precise dancers and stirring sounds of pipes and drums. It is one of the best shows I like. This year was Commemoration of the War of 1812.
